Learning at OJS

‘Leaders make sure that reading lies at the heart of the curriculum.’

Ofsted 2022

At Overdale Junior School, we aim to inspire our pupils and develop a love for learning, in an environment where every individual is valued for their unique contribution. We strive to provide pupils with the knowledge and skills needed to become critical thinkers, ready to embrace the challenges they will face throughout their lives.

We provide a safe, nurturing environment and endeavour to inspire children to develop intellectually, physically and creatively by ensuring that all pupils have equal access to stimulating teaching and learning opportunities.

Our curriculum is planned to be progressive, with research and evidence informed practice at the heart of our offer. Regular retrieval practice opportunities in all subjects, as well as purposeful links and connections are integral to allowing pupils to not only 'cover' a topic, but to transfer and commit knowledge to their long-term memories. Our aim is for children to build schema and the ability to think deeply, applying their knowledge and understanding in different concepts on their journey to becoming lifetime learners.

Please use the links on the left to read more about each area of learning.

In the 'Curriculum' section, you will find our  Curriculum Maps and Text Maps for each year group, which outlines learning for each term.

Please remember if you can't find what you're looking for, or just want that little bit more information, please don't hesitate to ask your class teacher or contact the office to make an appointment to speak to the relevant member of staff.

For the 24/25 academic year, we are embarking upon a very exciting project. To aid teaching and learning and to increase accessibility to learning for all pupils, each pupil will have their own ipad which they will keep in school and use throughout the day in most lessons. It will not replace teachers, real books or writing etc, but will enhance all of them. This project, called Frontiers, is in conjunction with our Trust colleagues and schools. There is more information within the leaflet below. We hope this will further enhance our curriculum and teaching and learning offer and get our pupils ready for a future with technology.  Within the first couple of weeks, your child will receive and begin to use their own ipad.

Please see the below iPad document.
