At Overdale Junior School, we are committed to delivering a high-quality mathematics education that ensures all children develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. From Year 3 to Year 6, we follow a mastery approach to teaching mathematics. This means we focus on helping children fully grasp each concept before moving on, ensuring no child is left behind and providing opportunities for all children to deepen their understanding.

To support our planning, we use White Rose Maths, a structured scheme that aligns with our medium-term plans. This resource guides us in breaking down key concepts into manageable steps, allowing children to build confidence and fluency. You will find our Long Term Plans below, which outline the topics we aim to cover throughout the year. While we aim to follow this as closely as possible, our approach is flexible and responsive to the needs of the class.

In line with our commitment to mastery, we use a variety of manipulatives to make abstract concepts more tangible for children. These include familiar resources from the infants like Diennes blocks, as well as place value counters and Numicon tiles. These hands-on tools help students visualize and understand the underlying structure of mathematical problems.

A strong foundation in core skills, especially times tables, is crucial. All children are provided with a login to TT Rockstars, a fantastic platform for practicing multiplication in a fun and engaging way. If you have any questions or need further details about your child’s login, please do not hesitate to speak with their class teacher.

Please find below our calculation policy, updated in 2024, which was written with the Infants maths co-ordinator to ensure a smooth transition between Years 2 and 6.

If you have any questions regarding the Maths curriculum, then please message me on Class Dojo.
