Prevent Duty
What Is Prevent?
Prevent is part of the Government’s wider counter-terrorism strategy. It aims to safeguard individuals who may be vulnerable to radicalisation or being drawn into extremist activity.
Schools have a statutory duty to help protect children from these risks as part of their wider safeguarding responsibilities.
How We Promote Prevent at Overdale Junior School
Many of the values and experiences that help children become respectful, responsible and successful members of society also support our Prevent duty.
We do this by:
- Promoting respect, tolerance and inclusion.
- Encouraging critical thinking and respectful discussion.
- Celebrating diversity and different cultures, beliefs and backgrounds.
- Challenging prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes.
- Helping children develop confidence, resilience and self-esteem.
- Teaching pupils how to stay safe online.
- Promoting British Values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance.
- Providing opportunities for children to discuss important issues in an age-appropriate way.
We also take practical steps to reduce risk through appropriate filtering and monitoring systems, robust safeguarding procedures and appropriate checks on visitors and external organisations working with pupils.
Children are encouraged to respect different viewpoints while understanding the importance of keeping themselves and others safe.
