French

At Overdale Junior School and across the OAK Trust, we are passionate about providing our pupils with a foreign languages curriculum that is relevant, broad, vibrant, and ambitious. Through a rich tapestry of engaging topics and diverse themes, we aim to spark curiosity and foster a genuine enthusiasm for language learning.

Our approach is rooted in high expectations and a commitment to excellence, ensuring that every child is supported to reach their full potential. We believe that learning a foreign language not only builds communication skills but also nurtures cultural awareness, confidence, and global citizenship.

Ultimately, our goal is for pupils to leave Key Stage 2 feeling inspired, capable, and eager to continue their language journey into secondary education and beyond.

At Overdale Junior School, our French curriculum is designed to immerse pupils in both the language and the rich cultural heritage of France. Each unit introduces children to key aspects of French culture while developing their skills in speaking, reading, and writing. Alongside vocabulary acquisition, pupils build a deeper understanding of grammar and sentence structure, enabling them to communicate with increasing confidence and accuracy.

Our lessons are carefully structured to revisit prior learning and apply it in new and varied contexts, supporting long-term retention and meaningful progress. This approach helps pupils grow not only as language learners but also as resilient, reflective thinkers.

Our dedicated French lead, Miss Gamble, ensures that every child is supported and challenged throughout their language journey.
